  • Every Toyota in the program comes with a CARFAX® Vehicle History Report™.
  • The warranty is transferable at no extra cost.
Cons

The Toyota Certified Used Vehicle (TCUV) program was launched in 1996 to allow buyers to buy slightly used Toyotas with some form of quality assurance and protection.

Toyota vehicles have a great reputation when it comes to reliability and are known to last for hundreds of thousands of miles. They also tend to keep their resale value better than many other brands. Despite this, Toyota knows that it is still worth having a warranty on a car that’s been used for a few years. The warranty is an assurance they have checked the vehicle for faults and will take responsibility for repairs in the event of any problems.

What IS Included with the Toyota Used Car Warranty

It’s always worth checking the inclusions, exclusions, and finer details when looking at any car warranty. With a used car, it’s even more important because it’s impossible to know how it was previously driven and maintained. The following are some of the important features of the Toyota TCUV program.

  • Bumper-to-Bumper Warranty

This warranty coverage includes any replacements due to workmanship defects. It’s Toyota’s promise that if they made any mistakes when building or repairing the car, they will be accountable and cover the necessary repairs. The bumper-to-bumper warranty lasts for 12 months or 12,000 miles and only covers manufacturing defects. General wear and tear items and general maintenance items are excluded from this limited comprehensive warranty. One of the excellent features of this warranty is that it is fully transferable at no extra cost. This means that it can increase the resale value of your car and make it easier to sell when the time comes.

In order for Toyota to commit to a bumper-to-bumper warranty on a used vehicle, they do a thorough, 160-point inspection to ensure that everything is in good working order. Some of the things they check include the braking system, engine compartment, steering system, , and the interior and exterior condition.

  • Powertrain Warranty

The 100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty covers most of the main engine and transmission components as well as internally lubricated parts. It lasts for seven years and covers the repairs and replacements of the components, should a problem arise. Some of the parts included in this warranty are the engine, transmission, transaxle, and the front- and rear-wheel drive systems.

One of the other great benefits of this CPO program is that it also covers travel protection and lodging reimbursement. If an issue occurs more than 150 miles from home, Toyota will honor their warranty on the car and also reimburse you for the added expenses. They also cover the costs of a rental vehicle while yours is being repaired.

These warranties also come with one year of roadside assistance. The service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and covers flat tires, jump starts, running out of gas, and towing. They also have a lockout service.

What’s NOT Included with the Toyota Used Car Warranty

With any type of warranty, you have to check the finer details to know what is and isn’t covered. The reason why they are called “limited warranties” is because they cover the workmanship but don’t cover the normal costs of owning the vehicle. All CPO warranties have these exclusions, not just Toyota. We’ll now take a look at some of the things not covered in the warranties. Routine maintenance means the servicing of the care and the replacement of parts that are considered to be wear and tear or consumable items and is not included. This includes things like the replacement of brake pads, wiper, oil, and air filters. These are all items that need to be replaced on any car and have nothing to do with faults or the workmanship on the vehicle.

Damages or failures caused by certain conditions are also not covered by the warranty. These include fire, accidents, theft, improper repairs, water contamination, and abuse or negligence. In order to be covered, the car also has to be used for normal use, meaning that racing or overloading is prohibited.

After years of use, most cars experience some form of deterioration. Some of these can include the paint fading, vibrations and rattles, and damage to the upholstery. These are also excluded from the warranty.

To maintain the warranty, the car should only be taken to Toyota dealerships because they have factory-trained technicians who will use genuine parts. You should also keep records of the service history for the duration of the warranty, including the service dates and work performed. If you don’t follow the servicing guidelines, it could void the warranty due to the lack of proper maintenance.

The Good Things About the Toyota Used Car Warranty

Breakdowns and roadside emergencies can happen at any time and without warning. By having one year of 24/7 roadside assistance, Toyota will be able to assist with various issues such as flat tires, dead batteries, fuel delivery, towing, and lockouts.

A brilliant feature of the powertrain warranty is that Toyota includes travel and substitute vehicle coverage. If you have any issues on the road, Toyota will reimburse the cost of hotels, meals, and rentals, provided you are 150 miles or more away from home. Between the roadside assistance, lodging reimbursement, and travel protection, you should be covered when it comes to roadside emergencies.

The fact that the warranty is transferable at no extra cost is also a great feature. It means that potential buyers will be more enticed thanks to having some form of coverage. This means the chances of making a sale increase. It can also have a positive effect on the resale value because most people don’t mind paying a bit extra for some peace of mind.

Disadvantages of the Toyota Used Car Warranty

While the Toyota pre-owned car warranty has some fantastic features, there are still a couple of drawbacks. Compared to many CPO programs offered by other manufacturers, Toyota’s selection criteria aren’t as stringent. This means that you might find cars with old model years instead of slightly used cars.

Two more factors that contribute toward this are the mileage and age requirements. While many other CPO programs normally have a six-year or 80,000-mile cutoff limit, the Toyota program has a seven-year and 85,000-mile cutoff limit. It may not seem like much, but it could mean getting an old model that’s already been replaced.

The last drawback is that while many other programs use a 174-point inspection to check their vehicles, Toyota’s minimum requirement is only 160 points. It can vary from dealership to dealership, depending on how the dealership is equipped and the car that’s chosen. The used car warranty covers most Toyota vehicles, including the Corolla, RAV4, and Highlander.

Is the Toyota Used Car Warranty Worth It?

If you are looking at getting a fairly new car without paying the price of a brand new car, it might be worth checking out the Toyota Used Car Warranty. If there is a serious mechanical failure on a regular second-hand car, you could be left with some very high costs, depending on the problem. With a warranty, you can have some assurance that any major failures will be covered by Toyota. The fact that they will be there for you if you have a breakdown makes the deal even sweeter.

FAQs

Q: Why is the maintenance schedule so strict?

Parts on poorly maintained vehicles fail earlier than they should. This means that Toyota will have to foot the bill to fix the issue and take a loss.

Q: What happens to my warranty if I modify my vehicle?

It might affect the warranty of your vehicle. Toyota’s warranty cover’s manufacturer defects, not modifications performed by third parties.

Q: Can I take my car to any Toyota dealership for warranty repairs?

Yes. Toyota has an extensive dealership network, and they are all authorized to service your warranty.
