The ’80s were truly chock full of great car chases. Reflecting back on what I’ve written here at Car Bibles alone, ‘King of the Mountain,’ ‘Against All Odds,’ and ‘The Hidden‘ have solid chases within their frames. It’s time to tack on yet another one: ‘No Man’s Land.’ One scene in particular from this movie has been re-soundtracked with a modern/retro synthwave song and the result is bizarrely riveting.

The original movie is as old as I am, and even (especially?) with its original score, quintessentially ’80s. I mean holy crap, take a second and just look at the trailer:

Produced by Orion Pictures, Charlie Sheen, undercover police work, Los Angeles glitz and glam, Randy Quaid well before he was out to lunch, a banger of a soundtrack… this picture has it all. Those are all minor aspects, however. The best part of this 50 percent on Rotten Tomatoes experience is its inclusion of glorious air-cooled Porsches. Especially said Porsches in hectic, well-shot chase scenes.

The plot is something along the lines of actor D.B. Sweeney going undercover to bust Charlie Sheen and his illegal, illicit, rascality-filled ways. Sounds like it could almost be semi-non-fiction…

I think that’s how the plot goes? Eh, who cares, whatever. What’s more important is there’s so much ’80s hardware of the tiny prancing horse variety and beyond. A Carrera, 911 T, SC, 924, Targa, Turbo, Carrera GTS; this should be required watching for all air-cooled worshippers. And poor, lonely 924 enthusiasts (I kid I kid, they’re cool cars, too).

The pièce de résistance is a scene when Sheen and Sweeney are on the verge of getting taken down while trying to steal a 911 Cabrio. Luckily, they arrive and leave in a 911 Turbo, which vastly out-guns the baddies’ Lincoln Mark V and third-gen Camaro. Maybe they’re cops though, and Sheen was about to get pinched? I’m not sure, I haven’t seen the movie yet. But one thing I know for sure is it’s a great scene, and even better with modern synthwave outfit Dance With the Dead sync’d up.

Check it out for yourself! And just look at how wallowly that Lincoln is!
