Coverage Basics of the Rolls-Royce CPO Warranty

The Rolls-Royce Provenance designation is awarded most often to relatively new Rolls-Royce models. You might find a 10-year-old Rolls used, but it’s not likely to be certified. Cars that receive the Provenance certification almost always have some of the original new car warranty left on them, which is good because that’s included in your CPO protection.

  • Bumper-to-Bumper Coverage

The Rolls-Royce new vehicle warranty offers bumper-to-bumper coverage for two years or unlimited miles. This is fully transferable to a new owner, but once it expires, the Provenance warranty is not included for free. Even if a Rolls-Royce receives the Provenance designation, the new owner has to pay extra for the Provenance warranty.

You can pay for either 12 or 24 months of extra coverage, with no maximum mileage. For the duration, you’ll enjoy total protection for any defects in factory-installed parts. Rolls-Royce never charges any deductible, and the policy is fully transferable to another owner, which helps bolster the resale value of your Rolls.

Note that warranty coverage of any kind only applies in the region where your vehicle is registered. If you break down too far afield, you’ll need to transport your Rolls-Royce back home before you can get covered for any defects.

  • Roadside Assistance

A Provenance Warranty comes with 24-hour roadside assistance for as long as the policy lasts. Rolls-Royce aims for their assistance program to be truly worldwide, and while they’re not quite there yet, they do provide service numbers for more than 50 countries on six continents.

It’s difficult to accurately list what Rolls-Royce Provenance roadside assistance entails, since the specific perks you’ll get vary based on your dealer. With most dealers, though, you can expect winch extraction, fuel delivery, lockouts, key replacement, battery jumps, tire changes, and trip interruption benefits for meals, lodging, and alternate transportation.

Be aware that while fuel delivery comes free of charge, you’re on the hook for a replacement tire. Roadside assistance also does not cover glass damage.

  • Servicing Package

For the duration of the new vehicle and Provenance warranty, Rolls-Royce dealers will not only replace defective parts free of charge, but they’ll also perform regular maintenance on fluids, brake pads, filters, and other items that suffer normal wear and tear. This package also extends to required statutory tests, such as emissions exams.

The servicing package is accompanied by condition-based servicing on an opt-in basis. This means that, if you’ve signed the form, software in your Rolls-Royce will monitor when basic repairs need to be done. If any work needs to happen, your car will send you a notification and initiate the process of scheduling an appointment with your dealer.

Things Left Out of the Rolls-Royce CPO Warranty

The Rolls-Royce Provenance Warranty doesn’t cover everything. While their contract is fairly extensive, it comes with both a list of components not covered and a few actions that will invalidate coverage.

To reiterate, the biggest exclusion is that the Provenance Warranty only works in your delivery region. Depending on the dealer, roadside assistance will likely be able to tow your Rolls back home to be repaired, but it’s not a sure thing.

  • Bumper-to-Bumper Coverage

Coverage on Provenance vehicles, like coverage on new Rolls-Royces, is limited to defects in items installed in the factory. It doesn’t compensate you for wear and tear items that naturally fail over time. While the included service package will replace some of these, not all wear items fit under the umbrella of recommended regular maintenance.

You can invalidate the warranty by using the car in an improper way. If your Rolls-Royce sustains damage while you’re driving it recklessly or if you break something while trying to alter it, your warranty will not cover the costs. You can also invalidate the warranty by failing to follow the recommended service plan.

Accidents are not covered, and the warranty does not cover glass damage at any time. Other forms of environmental damage, like hail, sand, or direct sun, are also not covered.

Perks of the Rolls-Royce CPO Warranty

It’s great that the Provenance warranty adds on to the already existing new vehicle warranty that Rolls-Royce offers. Since many Rolls-Royces are resold a short time after people buy them new, this means you’re getting a potentially unprecedented length of coverage for a luxury car.

The coverage itself is also nothing to scoff at. For as long as the warranty lasts, you get total, bumper-to-bumper peace of mind about all non-wear items. The lack of any deductibles or mileage limits sweetens the deal even further.

Roadside assistance is also nice, but what really turns our heads about this deal is the service package, which is one of those small perks that really puts the luxury in luxury autos. Not having to worry about regular maintenance or even plan dealership visits yourself doesn’t just save you hassle; it makes it easier to reap warranty perks by sticking to the recommended upkeep plan.

Disadvantages of the Rolls-Royce CPO Warranty

Unlimited mileage isn’t unlimited universally: if you use your Rolls-Royce for a commercial purpose, such as running a car service, it doesn’t apply.

Price is another disadvantage. It’s become standard, even for luxury automakers, to include warranties in their CPO programs, but Rolls-Royce is a holdout: you still have to pay extra for their Provenance warranty and even more for two years of it. Getting the remainder of the factory warranty takes out some of the sting but only some.

The Provenance CPO warranty is also held back from truly excelling by its regional restrictions. Rolls-Royce claims this is because they want to make sure your vehicle is “optimized for its environment,” but it still seems like a lead weight tied around an otherwise buoyant luxury auto experience.

We’d also like to see the option to extend the CPO warranty beyond two years. No matter how you slice it, driving a Rolls is an expensive habit, and this would have made it a better investment.

Takeaway Value

As far as luxury CPO warranties go, the Rolls-Royce Provenance program is in the middle of the pack. It matches excellent perks like a two-year service contract with unfortunate stumbling blocks like an unnecessary warranty fee.

Our verdict: this warranty is sometimes worth it but only if your Provenance Rolls-Royce is already more than 2 years old when you buy it. On a newer vehicle, it crosses the line and becomes an unnecessary expense.
