What IS Covered in the Porsche Extended Warranty

As an extended factory warranty, Porsche’s coverage mimics much of what the original warranty offers on new cars right from the Porsche dealership. As a result, you’ll see a lot of overlap between the two different coverages.

Protection Plans

The main bulk of the extended vehicle service protection plan from Porsche comes in the form of three separate protection plans you can choose. Each plan has a combination of different packages that extend the original warranty coverage or offer even more benefits.

The three plans include:

  • Silver: A basic plan that offers minimal component coverage and includes the Premier Tire and Wheel Protection and Dent Protection coverages. This is generally the most affordable plan.
  • Gold: This mid-tier plan offers more component coverage than the Silver plan while throwing the Windshield Protection coverage into the mix alongside the Premier Tire and Wheel Protection and Dent Protection options.
  • Platinum: With the most component coverage and an included Key Protection package, this plan is the most comprehensive of the three. You can expect the price tag to match the scope of the coverage as well.

Component Coverage

The extended warranty acts as an exclusionary type of warranty, meaning most components are covered except for a few listed parts. Specific component coverage includes covered parts from both the original comprehensive and powertrain warranties. This list includes systems like the:

  • Engine
  • Transmission and drivetrain components
  • Suspension and steering components
  • Certain brake components
  • Heating/air conditioning
  • Body panel components
  • Electrical and computer systems like built-in navigation units

What’s NOT Covered in the Porsche Extended Warranty

Like any factory warranty, there are a few limitations you should know about the Porsche extended protection plans before buying one.

Component Limitations

Depending on the protection plan that you buy, you should expect a few major limitations in the component coverage. For example, the extended warranty does not cover the repair or replacement of the spark plugs, drive belt, drive belt tensioner, and the rollers within the engine. For the transmission, there are also no covered repairs or replacements of the pressure plate and clutch disk.

Wear items that are expected to degrade over time are also not covered. This includes the repair and replacement of things like shock absorbers, tire sealants, tires, floor mats, fire extinguishers, oils and greases, filters, fluids, brake pads and disks, refrigerant gas, car lights, batteries, fuses, wiper blades, and the Porsche dynamic chassis control reservoir.

The Advantages of the Porsche Extended Warranty

The main perks of the new Porsche extended warranty come in the form of the customization you can get with the extended coverage. The best way to see this is to compare Porsche’s coverage with other automaker warranty offerings. Many automakers only give you one choice of a basic warranty extension that mimics the cover of the original warranty.

Porsche, on the other hand, offers a few different protection plans that differ in terms of scope and benefits. Depending on the mechanical needs of your Porsche, it’s easy to find the right protection plan and stay within your budget.

Porsche also throws in a few extra perks that many automakers simply lack. Dent and windshield protection, for example, go a long way to protect your wallet if some minor incidental damage occurs. While this coverage isn’t as extensive as some auto insurance policies and third-party warranty plans, it’s still more than what many competitors offer. Basic roadside assistance options like free towing are also available.

The Drawbacks of the Porsche Extended Warranty

Despite the extra coverages that you can get with the Porsche extended warranty program, don’t expect it to reach the same level of coverage as third-party warranty and insurance options. Outside coverage tends to offer more in areas where costs can quickly add up.

You can see this the most is the lack of maintenance cost reduction within the Porsche protection plans. Each package has a good mix of component and incidental damage coverage, but there’s almost nothing for routine repairs or maintenance many vehicles require to stay running as they age.

If you choose to include a Porsche protection plan while stilling wanting some cost-reducing benefits, you may need to consider adding some third-party coverage or insurance to get what you want. Otherwise, we generally recommend avoiding the factory extended warranty altogether and focusing on a comprehensive third-party option.

Takeaway Value

The Porsche Extended Warranty program offers a lot of coverage for a vehicle’s system, including the engine (the cylinder block, rotary housing, and internal parts), transmission (automatic or standard), turbocharger (if factory-installed), drive axle (front and rear), and seals, gaskets, taxes, and fluids. In other words, it offers a lot of peace of mind when you’re worried about factory defects and minor incidental damage.

With that said, it’s far from perfect. Since routine maintenance services are not included under the protection plans, this could be a deal-breaker if you want the maximum level of coverage for your vehicle. If you find, however, that some component and incidental coverage is enough for you, the Porsche warranty program may fit the bill.

FAQs

Q: Do I need an extended warranty from the factory?

It depends on you and your vehicle. Such warranties can help with basic costs from repairing factory defects, but they don’t always offer the maximum amount of coverage. Many people find more value from third-party warranty options instead.

Q: What does the Porsche extended warranty cover?

You will find most of the components covered in the Porsche factory warranty to be included here as well. Some electrical systems and accessories like the radio and CD player, and most wear items, are only covered in some cases.
