What IS Included

There are three levels of protection plans that you can purchase from MINI: Platinum, Gold, and Powertrain. Platinum is the most comprehensive and covers nearly all components of the vehicle. Gold is nearly as comprehensive but does fall short in a few areas. Powertrain has fewer covered repairs. You’ll get to choose between five, six, or seven-year warranties with mileage caps of 75,000 or 100,000.

Platinum

Platinum level coverage is only available to Certified Pre-Owned MINIs. This is because nearly all the components in the vehicle are covered, so MINI really needs to know what state the vehicle is in before entering into a contract with you. This level includes all drivetrain, electrical, infotainment, HVAC, brakes, steering, and the list goes on. This is basically a complete warranty on the vehicle.

Gold

The Gold level package is available on new, used, and Certified Pre-Owned vehicles. This warranty coverage is similar to the Platinum package in that it covers the engine, transmission, brakes, HVAC, steering, transfer case, fuel systems, forced induction components, and most electrical components.

Powertrain

This level of coverage is limited to drivetrain components. You’ll have coverage of most engine, transmission, forced induction, and fuel system components. It’s also available on all new, used, and Certified Pre-Owned vehicles.

What’s NOT Included

There are varying levels of exclusions to the MINI service contracts as well, so it’s important to take a look at what is not included before you make a decision about which warranty is right for you. We’ve laid out the exclusions for you based on the coverage level below. As expected, Platinum has the least exclusions, while Powertrain excludes the most.

Platinum

The Platinum package is nearly all-inclusive but does leave out a few items. MINI is a little vague but does state Platinum level coverage limits the warranty on the interior and exterior components, and this is probably to protect their interest in the event of user damage.

Gold

The Gold package offers very extensive coverage and, as such, the list of exclusions and limitations of this warranty is short. MINI states there’s limited coverage on electrical, interior, and exterior components and that there is no coverage of any infotainment components. If your touchscreen with navigation fails on you, that repair will have to come out of your pocket.

Powertrain

The Powertrain level of coverage has the most excluded parts and systems. You won’t be able to get coverage for any steering, braking, heating, air conditioning, interior, exterior, or infotainment issues. There’s limited coverage on the engine, transmission, final drive assembly, electrical, cooling, and fuel systems.

The Advantages

MINI vehicles have come a long way since their early years. Originally a simple car with limited features and parts, BMW’s ownership has changed the way MINIs are built. They now feature complex creature comforts, turbochargers, and high-tech safety features, and the factory warranty may run out before these components fail you. MINI’s Extended Warranty program might cover the cost of new parts and the labor of installing them, depending on which level of warranty you purchase.

There’s also value in knowing that the parts being replaced are certified MINI original parts and that the work is being done by certified technicians at an authorized MINI repair facility. You can be confident that the repair will be done correctly by knowledgeable personnel.

When it comes time to move on from your MINI, the warranty will really show its value. Having such a comprehensive warranty like a Platinum or Gold level ensures the prospective buyer that your vehicle was well taken care of. That translates to a better trade-in value at the dealership or a higher private sale price.

The Drawbacks

The Platinum level of coverage is only available to Certified Pre-Owned MINIs. While we do recognize why a CPO would get a better warranty, we’d prefer one level of top tier coverage to keep things simple. The coverages between Platinum and Gold are so similar, while the Powertrain coverage is pretty limited. Consolidating the top tier might make room for a middle-of-the-road package to bridge the gap between the Gold and Powertrain levels.

MINI should clarify which interior and exterior components are warrantied and what they’re warrantied against. The information provided is vague, and we like to know what we’re getting into before we sign our name on the dotted line.

MINI’s Powertrain coverage is somewhat misleading. The world “powertrain” implies that all engine, transmission, and final-drive assembly components would be covered, and that’s simply not the case. There’s limited coverage on everything but transfer cases (all-wheel-drive models only) and turbochargers.

Takeaway Value

The MINI Extended Warranty program can be a great value to a MINI owner. It doesn’t matter how reliable a vehicle is; there will be an issue at some point. MINIs are more complex than ever, and purchasing an extended warranty ahead of time is an excellent way to protect yourself against a costly repair and protect your car’s value.
