What IS Included with the MINI CPO Warranty

MINI’S Certified Pre-Owned warranty covers nearly everything on your vehicle. It’s a comprehensive warranty that combines bumper-to-bumper and powertrain coverage under the same umbrella. There are two levels of coverage, depending on how old your CPO vehicle is when you purchase it.

Regular MINI CPO Warranty

Vehicles less than five years and with less than 50,000 miles are eligible for the regular Certified Pre-Owned warranty. This warranty adds up to two years and 50,000 miles of coverage. The additional coverage takes over after the expiration of the four-year, 50,000-mile MINI new passenger car limited warranty.

MINI’s powertrain coverage is fully comprehensive under this warranty. When the vehicle goes through its 197-point inspection prior to certification, MINI technicians are tasked with making sure that the powertrain is running according to MINI’s high standards. This includes the engine, transmission, and transfer cases. Any issues after certification are considered warrantable repairs and will be taken care of for the cost of your deductible.

Bumper-to-bumper coverage is very similar. For the duration of the warranty period, any issues you run into with the rest of the vehicle will be covered. Any issues with electrical, braking, air conditioning, power steering, or infotainment systems will be repaired under the normal MINI CPO warranty. This comprehensive coverage provides some peace of mind.

NEXT 575 Warranty

The NEXT 575 warranty is available on newer Certified Pre-Owned MINIs with less than 36,000 miles on them. If the vehicle you’re looking at falls into this category, you’ll only get one additional year of coverage along with an additional 25,000 miles.

Bumper-to-bumper and powertrain coverage for the NEXT 575 CPO warranty is very similar to the normal warranty. You’ll get the same inspection, and once certified, all the powertrain components will be warrantied against faulty workmanship or parts. The same goes for bumper-to-bumper problems. Any issues with the electrical, braking, air conditioning, power steering, or infotainment systems should be covered without issue. 

While the CPO warranty will get your MINI back on the road, you should know there will be some out-of-pocket costs. For each issue that you bring your MINI in for, whether it’s under the normal or NEXT 575 warranty, there will be a $50 deductible. 

What’s NOT Included with the MINI CPO Warranty

There are a few things that aren’t covered by either of the MINI Certified Pre-Owned warranties. These range from structural components to routine maintenance. If you have an issue with any of the following parts or systems, you will likely have to pay for it yourself.

Routine Maintenance

The normal MINI CPO warranty and the NEXT 575 warranties do not include maintenance programs and plans like some warranties from other companies do. You are responsible for scheduling and paying for your vehicle’s regular and routine maintenance. 

This means that any oil changes, air filter replacements, brake pad or rotor replacements, tire rotations or replacements, or wiper blade replacements are going to be on you. The battery, drive belts, exhaust system, and any fluids or lubricants required for maintenance will also be your responsibility.

While Certified Pre-Owned MINIs are reliable vehicles, they’re not inexpensive to maintain. MINI spends a lot of money and time training its technicians and keeping its shops on the cutting edge. This translates to higher maintenance costs. Make sure you consider these extra costs of ownership and budget for them appropriately.  

Body and Suspension Components

MINI does not cover many body parts after the certifying inspection. Once the car is certified, the body parts and components are considered to be in good condition and will not be warrantied against failure, damage, or corrosion.

There will be no coverage for paintwork, door latches and handles, windows, convertible tops, or damage caused by rust. For example, if your Countryman is having a problem related to the body and it cannot be traced to an electrical issue, MINI will not cover it under these plans. Keep that in mind before you purchase your MINI so you can give it a thorough look-over for possible future issues like paint chips that could rust.

Any suspension or structural components are also not warrantied under these two Certified Pre-Owned warranty plans. This includes any suspension components like shocks or springs, control arms and brackets, and ball joints and bushings. So, if you plan on lowering your John Cooper Works hardtop Cooper S, you might want to think again.

The Good Things About the MINI CPO Warranty

MINI doesn’t change its coverage terms between the powertrain and bumper-to-bumper warranty. There’s only one set of terms for each tier. So, if your vehicle is under warranty, you don’t have to worry about whether an issue you’re having falls under the powertrain or bumper-to-bumper warranty.

MINI’s 24/7 roadside assistance is also a serious benefit. Even a good car can leave you on the side of the road. If it’s under warranty, MINI will send assistance to your location, tow your vehicle to a repair shop, and start the warranty process. The coverage terms are also the same as your powertrain and bumper-to-bumper coverage. 

The MINI Certified Pre-Owned warranty and the NEXT 575 warranty are fully transferable. This means that you might get more for your vehicle if you decide to sell it during the warranty period. If your vehicle is sold through the MINI dealer network, there is no fee. However, private sales require an application for transfer and a fee. 

The Bad Things About the MINI CPO Warranty

MINI breaks its CPO warranty program into two tiers based on the age of the vehicle and its mileage. We don’t particularly care for this move, as it seems you’re being penalized for buying a newer vehicle. The NEXT 575 plan doesn’t cover the vehicle for as long as the normal warranty plan does. It would make sense that MINI would want to warranty the newer cars for at least as long as the normal plan, as they should have fewer issues if properly maintained.

There’s a $50 deductible for each issue that your MINI Cooper or Clubman has. While it doesn’t seem like a lot of money to pay to have a transmission or engine replaced, if you’re bringing a vehicle in for difficult-to-diagnose issues, you may find yourself paying $50 a few times before the issue is resolved. There are plenty of companies that offer no-deductible warranties, and we would like to see MINI head that direction.

It’s also worth noting that these warranties are only extensions of the original four-year new car warranty. If the coverage is being described as six-year coverage, you should be aware that this is only adding two years of coverage after the expiration of the four-year new car warranty. In other words, this coverage begins on the original sale date, not the date that you purchased the vehicle as a CPO car. 

Takeaway Value

MINI’s CPO Warranty is a good idea if you’re looking to save some money over buying a new MINI. There are some quirks, however, such as that you may be better off purchasing a slightly older Certified Pre-Owned vehicle in order to get better warranty terms. We also wish the body and suspension coverage were more comprehensive. On the whole, we feel the MINI Certified Pre-Owned warranty is a good idea and should be considered if you’re shopping for a MINI.
