McLaren isn’t as well-known in the United States as fellow British luxury automakers Jaguar, Bentley, Rolls-Royce, and Aston Martin. Until recently, most people knew them as a Formula One team—until 2018, when they exploded onto the American scene by clocking their 5,000th U.S. sale.

With McLaren’s presence growing, it’s now reasonable to find certified pre-owned McLarens on the American market. We decided to check out McLaren’s CPO warranty, known as McLaren Qualified, to see what sort of protections pre-owned buyers enjoy.

McLaren CPO Warranty Basic Inclusions

Once a McLaren passes an in-depth inspection of every component in the vehicle, it gains the status of “Qualified,” which is just McLaren’s word for certified pre-owned. Qualified vehicles are eligible for 1 year or 12,000 miles of warranty coverage, which can be increased to 2 years or 24,000 miles.

Bumper-to-Bumper Coverage

McLaren’s factory warranty covers vehicles for three years. If a McLaren is sold while less than 2 years old, it might be covered partially or entirely by the remainder of that new car warranty. Qualified warranty coverage can be added to the factory warranty so long as the McLaren is at least 1 year old.

The McLaren Qualified warranty covers both parts and labor for any warrantable defects. “Warrantable defects” includes all factory-fitted parts except for those that might fail due to wear and tear. It isn’t completely clear in the policy what McLaren considers a wear item, though typical wear items include batteries, belts, spark plugs, brake pads, windshield wipers, and tires.

McLaren is refreshingly detailed about the inspection vehicles undergo to gain Qualified status. In addition to a multi-point examination of each component, they guarantee that all servicing required within three months of vehicle handover will have been carried out, and that tires will be approved by their engineers and retain at least 3 mm (0.11 in) of tread.

Roadside Assistance

All McLaren Qualified warranties come with a 12-month roadside assistance guarantee. Upon purchasing a covered vehicle, you’ll receive a direct phone number you can use to contact the McLaren team with any issues you might encounter on the road.

It’s important to note, however, that while the company guarantees roadside assistance, actual assistance is provided by local dealerships, and thus will vary based on your market. Some markets both on-the-spot assistance and towing, along with replacement vehicles and lodging allowances. Others can’t guarantee roadside assistance at all.

The best way to know exactly what sort of roadside assistance you can expect is to contact your local McLaren dealer—all we can say for certain is that this is a very important step to take.

McLaren CPO Warranty Basic Exclusions

In many ways, McLaren’s Qualified CPO program goes farther than most pre-owned coverage, particularly in the way they guarantee things like the amount of tread on the vehicle’s tires. In other ways, it falls shorter. We’ve done our best to run down everything that won’t be covered on a McLaren Qualified vehicle.

Vehicles Qualified Over 2 Years Ago

The McLaren Qualified bumper-to-bumper protections are generally pretty expansive, but there is a limit. The Qualified warranty can only be extended up to 2 years or 24,000 miles past the date of initial certification, even if it’s resold during that time. After that, your McLaren can only be covered by the company’s extended warranty. Without that extended warranty, it’s also not possible to get any sort of unlimited mileage guarantee on a Qualified McLaren.

Wear Components and Non-Warrantable Items

This isn’t a service contract. As we mentioned above, the McLaren Qualified Warranty does not cover any component not installed in the factory, nor any components degraded through natural wear and tear. Don’t expect to be able to get oil changes or basic brake jobs comped through this warranty—it’s only for defects in factory-installed parts.

The Advantages of the McLaren CPO Warranty

One thing that strikes us about McLaren’s Qualified CPO warranty is how dedicated it is to removing customer pain points. If you need to go into your dealer to fix a factory defect, they want to make sure your experience is as painless as possible.

Not only will McLaren staff handle all paperwork and administration, but you’ll never be charged a deductible, nor hit with a limit on the value of claims you can make. McLarens are expensive to repair, which makes this an incredible deal.

We also like the extreme rigor of the inspection for Qualified status. Of course, everybody boasts about their gazillion-point inspection, but McLaren proves they’re serious by checking tire treads, handling basic maintenance, and using only McLaren parts.

It’s also good to see that the McLaren Qualified warranty is completely transferable to new owners, should you decide to sell it. This keeps the resale value of your investment high.

The Drawbacks of the McLaren CPO Warranty

The most noticeable drawback of McLaren’s Qualified Warranty is that it doesn’t come standard and doesn’t last long. A Qualified McLaren isn’t automatically sold with coverage. You have to buy it and upgrade it again if you want coverage for more than a year.

As rigorous as their inspection might be, even 24 months isn’t long enough for some factory defects to appear. When considering the whole world of luxury CPO cars, it’s not the shortest, but it’s still disappointingly scant.

It can also be frustrating to try and figure out exactly what is and isn’t covered. More frustrating, though, is trying to get clarity on roadside assistance, which fluctuates from excellent to nonexistent depending on where your McLaren breaks down. It feels far too much like rolling the dice.

Another note: the limited-series McLaren P1 is excluded from the Qualified program, meaning anyone attempting to resell one will sacrifice a lot of value.

Takeaway Value

The McLaren Qualified warranty is a tale of mixed extremes. On the one hand, their detailed inspections and near-total coverage inspire a lot of confidence. On the other hand, the program’s short duration and occasional vagueness about its offerings keeps us at a cautious distance.

The bottom line? Adding a warranty to a pre-owned McLaren is still better than no protection at all, but we’d also recommend exploring alternative coverage options, including McLaren’s own extended warranty.
