Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V. (formerly the Chrysler Group LLC), which makes Jeep, Dodge, and Ram vehicles, offers a used car warranty on its certified pre-owned vehicles that provides good protection for buyers.

The warranty covers repairs on all parts and labor, bumper to bumper, for three months or 3,000 miles. The warranty also extends the original powertrain coverage of five years, 60,000 miles, making it a 100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty for a total of seven years.

Extras include roadside assistance, towing, lockout services, and rental car allowance. Drawbacks are a $100 deductible and the short time and mileage limits of the bumper-to-bumper warranty.

What IS Included with the Jeep CPO Warranty

Jeep’s Maximum Care Warranty covers all major assemblies and parts for three months or 3,000 miles, whichever comes first. The service date begins when the driver takes delivery at the dealership of a certified pre-owned vehicle or when the remaining coverage of the three-year, 36,000 new car warranty expires, whichever date is later.

To qualify for a CPO warranty, the Jeep must be five years old or newer, have less than 75,000 miles on the odometer, and pass a 125-point certification process. Also included in the warranty is roadside assistance, towing, and rental vehicle reimbursement.

Bumper to Bumper

The warranty coverage includes the cooling system, fuel, and the air conditioning systems; the front and rear suspension; the electrical system and components, including computers and software; the torsion bars; shock absorbers; brakes and anti-lock brakes; engine mounts; instrumentation; and all hood, seat, trunk, liftgate, lid, and window and door mechanisms.

Powertrain

The original powertrain warranty is extended under the CPO warranty. It protects your vehicle if a component fails up to seven years and 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. It includes power train components like the engine, the transmission, and the other assemblies and components used to deliver power to the wheels.

Major engine parts covered include the block, cylinder heads, oil and water pumps, exhaust, and intake manifolds. It covers all transmission parts and components such as the axles, transaxles, and wheel bearings that make up the rest of the powertrain.

What’s NOT Included with the Jeep CPO Warranty

This warranty does not cover certain things, such as wear items. These are components that naturally wear out and become unusable over time or through use.

Also excluded are tires and windshield wipers and maintenance services like oil changes and tire rotations. The warranty doesn’t cover plastic, glass lenses, paint, body repairs (including dents), and soft-trim items such as vinyl tops, upholstery, and visors. Other items not covered include brake parts, hoses, belts, spark plugs, lubricants, tune-ups, filters, and bulbs.

The warranty does not cover any accessories or parts you may add to your vehicle, such as a winch, trailer hitch, snowplow, radio, and speed control devices. Also excluded are materials. additives, and fluids like transmission fluid and motor oil not specified in the vehicle owner’s manual. Any repair costs in using these items are also excluded.

Any racing or performance parts are not covered. The warranty specifically states it does not cover damage caused by the environment, such as tree sap, salt, hailstones, road hazards, and acid rain. This includes any cracks and dents caused by the natural environment. The warranty does not cover lost time, lodging, personal property, or loss of revenue.

Other Exclusions

Exclusions to this warranty are items that the automaker does not consider warrantable. This means broad areas of negligence: willful breaking or misusing the vehicle and using the vehicle other than for private purposes, such as an ambulance service, police service, or postal delivery.

The company does not cover damage caused by accidents or fire. It does not provide coverage if you damage the vehicle by driving it over a curb or overloading it or if you fail to take reasonably good care of the vehicle, such as parking it safely and away from hazards. Other exclusions are damage to the front and rear windshield from objects like stones or pebbles.

If you tamper with the emissions system or any part that affects the emissions system, warranty coverage is excluded. You cannot use used parts to repair the vehicle; however, genuine MOPAR remanufactured parts are covered. Use of any fluid that doesn’t meet the minimal recommendations stated in the owner’s manual is also an exclusion.

The Good Things about the Jeep CPO Warranty

The warranty provides peace of mind because the vehicle must pass a 125-point appearance and mechanical inspection to qualify for coverage.

But the best advantage of the Jeep CPO warranty is that it extends the powertrain coverage of five years and 60,000 miles to seven years and 100,000 miles. This gives you extra time and mileage where you may need it: on the engine, transmission, and powertrain parts. The powertrain portion of the warranty is also transferable one time ($150 transfer fee required).

The CPO warranty also provides roadside assistance 24/7 and a $35/day allowance for rental car coverage for five days of repairs. So, if the CPO vehicle breaks down, you needn’t worry about towing or even minor things like a flat tire or a dead battery because the warranty covers this.

You also get a free Carfax vehicle history report and a three-month free Sirius XM satellite radio trial. The vehicle history report is especially valuable because you can tell where the previous owners drove the Jeep, what repairs and maintenance they did on it, and other information such as whether previous owners performed safety recall repairs.

The Bad Things about the Jeep CPO Warranty

Undoubtedly, the worst thing about the Jeep certified pre owned warranty is the short, three-month time and mileage limit (3,000 miles) for which it covers a used CPO vehicle, bumper to bumper. This means that after three months or 3,000 miles on the odometer, you must pay parts and labor costs for any component assembly that fails anywhere on the vehicle. In comparison, many automakers cover their products for at least one year.

Another downside is that a $100 deductible is required for this CPO program. This means that even if a part fails that is covered under the CPO warranty, like a shock absorber, electric window, or a wheel bearing, in order for the warranty to cover it you must first pay $100. While luxury car makers sometimes have higher deductibles, no mainstream automaker has a higher one and most companies have no deductible at all.

Because this warranty only covers used vehicles less than 5 years old with fewer than 75,000 miles, coverage is not available for vehicles that exceed either of these limits.

Takeaway Value

This is a good certified pre-owned program in many respects, especially with the extended powertrain coverage of 100,000 miles. The bumper-to-bumper main CPO warranty is good in that it covers all parts and part assemblies on the Jeep and it provides roadside assistance.

It’s also beneficial because in order for it to be an eligible vehicle, the Jeep has to pass a 125-point inspection before the company even considers issuing CPO coverage. Improvements we’d like to see include longer bumper-to-bumper time and mileage coverage and a lower or zero deductible.
