Infiniti has a well-deserved reputation for offering one of the best values in luxury cars. This makes them one of the best starting points for getting an even better deal on a luxury vehicle by buying certified pre-owned.

If an Infiniti meets their extensive requirements to get certified—including having a totally clear title history and CARFAX report and being under 6 years and 70,000 miles from its original service date—it’s eligible to be sold with Infiniti’s CPO warranty. In this article, we’ll explain all the protections you’ll enjoy through the Infiniti CPO program.

What IS Covered in the Infiniti CPO Warranty

Infiniti’s CPO Warranty can be daunting to understand at first, since it’s assigned in three different forms to different categories of vehicles. However, coverage for each tier is almost exactly the same—it’s just the length of protection that changes. To keep it simple, remember that mileage always starts at the date the vehicle was first bought and driven, so it always refers to the number on the odometer.

Bumper-to-Bumper Coverage

If your certified pre-owned Infiniti has less than 15,000 miles on the odometer, total warranty coverage will last until it’s 6 years old or has driven 75,000 miles, whichever comes first. This starts from the vehicle’s initial service date, NOT the date it was sold pre-owned.

If the Infiniti has more than 15,000 miles on the odometer but is less than 4 years old, coverage will last until it’s 6 years old with no mileage limit. This also starts from the initial service date.

If your Infiniti has more than 15,000 miles on it AND is more than 4 years old, coverage will last for two years from the date it was sold pre-owned with no mileage limit.

Bumper-to-bumper coverage on Infiniti’s CPO warranty means that they’ll repair or replace any part that suffers a mechanical breakdown. This includes the engine, transmission, powertrain, air bags, and anything else not considered a wear item. “Wear items” include parts like windshield wipers and brake pads that degrade through normal use. Repairs have to be made at an official Infiniti dealer or approved garage.

Roadside Assistance

While the warranty is active, you’ll enjoy 24-hour roadside assistance on your pre-owned Infiniti. Representatives are available around the clock to deliver up to $5 worth of gas, jumpstart your battery, change flat tires, or let you into your car when you lock yourself out.

If your car needs to be towed to a mechanic, Infiniti will cover that up to 250 miles but only if the breakdown was mechanical. This benefit doesn’t activate in the case of accidents.

If the breakdown occurred more than 100 miles from your home, Infiniti also offers interrupted-trip coverage, which grants up to $500 for alternate transportation, food, and lodging.

Dispute Arbitration

Infiniti has devoted a large portion of their CPO warranty to making sure that customers feel their complaints are being heard. They offer a three-step program for airing grievances.

The first step is to raise the problem with your Infiniti dealer, and the second is to contact Infiniti’s customer service line. If you still feel your complaint is not being addressed, you can take it to AUTO LINE, an independent service operated by the Better Business Bureau. There, it will be judged by a three-person panel.

You can choose whether to accept the panel’s decision. If you choose to accept, it’s considered legally binding for both you and Infiniti.

What’s NOT Covered in the Infiniti CPO Warranty

Infiniti’s warranties, on vehicles both new and CPO, aren’t as extensive as some. However, one service they do provide is transparency and honesty about what isn’t covered. You might not have all the protections you want, but you can at least feel comfortable you won’t be blindsided by missing coverages.

Electric Vehicles

Infiniti’s CPO warranty doesn’t cover 100 percent electric vehicles (EVs). However, partially electric vehicles (hybrids) are still covered.

Non-Mechanical Components

As noted above, the Infiniti CPO warranty is focused on mechanical breakdowns. This means that parts that are not mechanical or parts that wear down or break for non-mechanical reasons are not covered under the warranty.

Components that aren’t covered include paint, exhaust systems, glass, any soft substance such as carpeting or trim, wear items like belts, batteries, and tires, entertainment components, and navigation systems.

Regular Maintenance After One Year

Infiniti provides complimentary preventative maintenance for the first year you own the vehicle. This includes manual-recommended care, like tuneups, fluid replacements, and brake checks. After a year, you’re on the hook for regular care.

The Advantages of the Infiniti CPO Warranty

The best thing about Infiniti’s CPO warranty is the way that it provides for the needs of almost any sort of pre-owned vehicle. By including coverage even after a CPO vehicle is 4 years old and has 15,000 miles on the odometer—and by tying that coverage to the sale date rather than initial service date—this warranty ensures that no mechanical breakdowns will be missed.

We also really like how many unlimited-mileage perks there are. Any pre-owned Infiniti with more than 15,000 miles will be covered, no matter how far you or any previous owner has driven it. It’s always great to find a warranty that doesn’t discriminate against drivers who enjoy long trips.

While we wish it was longer, the year of complimentary maintenance is quite nice. Finally, while it’s pretty much expected from a warranty in 2020, 24/7 roadside assistance is always excellent. Infiniti’s focus on peace of mind goes a long way. After all, reduced stress should be one of the luxuries associated with any luxury vehicle.

The Drawbacks of the Infiniti CPO Warranty

There’s no way to mince words about it: there is a lot that this warranty doesn’t cover. A lot of luxury warranties, even for pre-owned vehicles, now cover wear items, so the list of parts Infiniti doesn’t cover feels longer than it should be.

The refusal to cover electric vehicles also stings, especially since the CEO of Infiniti recently announced that every single vehicle the company produces from 2021 onward will be fully electric. Hopefully, they roll out coverage for these cars soon, or they’ll just be creating a serious disincentive for potential customers.

And lastly, while the various tiers of coverage granted to different ages of vehicle ensure that there’s a relatively consistent point at which you should recycle your Infiniti, it feels needlessly complicated. We’d prefer to see unlimited mileage for every driver. Only offering it on vehicles sold with more than 15,000 miles on them feels arbitrary.

Takeaway Value

Unfortunately, we’re not prepared to say that we like enough in Infiniti’s CPO warranty to make it a reason for buying an Infiniti all on its own. There are a lot of points missing, and it falls slightly short of the goal of total peace of mind. That said, it’s also not a reason to not buy an Infiniti. If that’s the brand you have your heart set on, then by all means seek out a CPO deal. Just go into it with a clear sense of exactly how covered you’ll be.
