The Honda Civic new vehicle limited warranty has two parts. The basic warranty, known as the bumper-to-bumper warranty, has a coverage period of three years/36,000 miles, whichever comes first. You also get a powertrain limited warranty when you buy a new Civic. It lasts five years/60,000 miles, whichever comes first.

  • Bumper-to-Bumper and Powertrain Coverage

Nearly all components inside and out of your Honda Civic are included in the bumper-to-bumper warranty. If something fails due to a defect in materials or workmanship, the warranty will cover it without any charges to the consumer. This can be anything from the electrical system to the headrests to the stereo speakers.

The powertrain warranty covers the engine, transmission/transaxle, and the front-wheel-drive system. Most items not included in the powertrain warranty are part of the bumper-to-bumper warranty. The powertrain warranty covers items such as the following:

  • Cylinder block and head
  • Timing gear and gaskets
  • Timing chain/belt and cover
  • Flywheel
  • Valve covers
  • Oil pan and oil pump
  • Intake and exhaust manifolds
  • Engine mounts
  • Engine powertrain control module
  • Water pump and fuel pump
  • Seals and gaskets
  • Torque converter case and transfer case
  • Transmission/powertrain control module
  • Final drive housing and driveshaft
  • Constant velocity joints
  • Front hubs and bearings

  • Roadside Assistance and Other Coverage

Honda Roadside Assistance is provided to all Civic owners for three years/36,000 miles. The 24-hour program provides services such as flat tire assistance, jump starts, towing, winching, fuel delivery, and key lockout assistance in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. If your vehicle breaks down more than 100 miles from home, Honda provides trip interruption benefits, including a maximum of $300 for food, lodging, and alternative transportation.

If your Civic rusts so badly that a hole perforates through the steel, Honda’s rust perforation limited warranty will cover it for five years. There is no mileage limit attached. It doesn’t cover instances in which the surface body rusts as a result of a lack of maintenance or vehicle misuse/abuse. Also, this warranty only applies to the original owner and is not transferable.

If your key fob batteries fail or the wiper blade inserts need replaced within six months of ownership, the warranty covers these issues. It also covers air conditioner refrigerant for two years/24,000 miles and wheel balancing/alignment for one year/12,000 miles unless they are part of a warranted repair.

You also receive the following:

  • Federal emissions warranties
  • California emissions warranty
  • Hybrid powertrain warranty
  • High-voltage battery capacity warranty
  • Accessory limited warranty
  • Replacement/remanufactured parts warranty
  • Replacement 12-volt battery warranty
  • Replacement exhaust components lifetime limited warranty

What’s NOT Covered in the Honda Civic Warranty

One reason why automakers provide warranties is to instill consumer confidence. A Honda Civic must meet certain criteria before it is put on the showroom floor. Should a factory-related defect manifest, the manufacturer will correct the problem within a set period of time free of charge. However, the warranty does not cover everything.

  • Wear and Tear, Normal Maintenance & More

While the warranty for a Honda Civic is fairly comprehensive, it does have some exclusions. The warranty will not cover damage caused by vehicle misuse or abuse. If your vehicle is damaged by an act of nature, such as a lightning strike, flood, or hail storm, the warranty will not provide compensation for the loss.

Problems caused by improper fueling or the use of fluids not recommended by Honda are also excluded. If you use aftermarket parts that are not equivalent to Honda parts, then the warranty does not apply. If you use parts and accessories that aren’t a proper fit with your Civic or are not authorized by the automaker, the warranty will not cover them.

Honda does not cover normal wear and tear or maintenance needs, such as oil filters, brake pads, and windshield wiper inserts. If the vehicle has some cosmetic flaws due to manufacturing or the shipping process, the warranty won’t cover it. Also excluded are broken, chipped, or scratched glass and cleaning and polishing.

Vehicles with altered odometers will not be covered by the warranty. As for tires, they are covered under a separate warranty.

The Good Things about the Honda Civic Warranty

What’s great about the warranty for a new Honda Civic is that it covers a large number of components. If your vehicle has a defective part related to anything from the engine to the upholstery, the automaker will repair or replace it at no cost. Some electrical and mechanical components can be very expensive to fix, so it’s great to have that protection.

Another great feature is the ability to transfer the Civic’s warranty to another person or party. If you choose to sell your vehicle, the warranty goes with it. This is advantageous because it can increase the resale value. Car shoppers are more likely to purchase a vehicle with a warranty than one without.

Also, Honda Roadside Assistance can be very convenient. If your Civic breaks down on the way to work or out of state on a road trip, you can get help with a flat tire, jump start, etc. Or the technicians will tow your vehicle to the nearest Honda-authorized facility for repairs. And since assistance is available 24/7, you are protected at all times.

Finally, Honda provides trip reimbursement if you are stranded over 100 miles from home. The automaker will set you up in a hotel/motel, provide alternate transportation, and even feed you for a few days while your Civic undergoes repairs.

The Bad Things about the Honda Civic Warranty

What’s not so great about the Honda Civic warranty is its length. Specifically, the bumper-to-bumper warranty of three years/36,000 miles is rather short compared to what some other car manufacturers provide. Volkswagen, for example, has a four-year/50,000-mile basic warranty on its 2020 models. And automakers like Hyundai provide a significantly longer powertrain warranty of 10 years/100,000 miles.

However, many of Honda’s competitors, including Toyota, Nissan, and Ford, also have bumper-to-bumper and powertrain warranties that are on the low end of the spectrum. So Honda is not unique in this regard.

Also, even though Honda’s coverage is quite comprehensive, it has some restrictions. For example, it doesn’t cover normal wear and tear, maintenance, acts of nature, or aftermarket accessories and parts. If you get stuck in floodwater, need an oil change, or want to boost performance with a non-OEM exhaust, you’re responsible for the cost of repairs or any related issues that may surface.

Takeaway Value

Most defect-related problems manifest within a couple years of a vehicle’s service life. So, even though the duration of Honda’s warranty is a little on the short side, it’s still long enough to protect you from the majority of problems that are likely to occur. Plus, you get roadside assistance and perks like trip interruption benefits should your vehicle unexpectedly break down.

The warranty is pretty standard compared to those offered by its rivals, so you really can’t go wrong if you want a new Honda Civic.
