Coverage Basics of the Honda Certified Warranty

The Honda CPO warranty offers guaranteed coverage of the engine and transmission components, including the repair of defective materials. There is also a 182-point inspection process that tries to find and correct any defects within the certified vehicle, such as the brakes, engine, steering, drivetrain, suspension, tires, and exhaust system.

Comprehensive

Honda offers “non-powertrain coverage” for vehicles sold with an expired New Vehicle Limited Warranty. The extra coverage lasts for a period of one year or 12,000 miles, which starts after the delivery of the car.

The comprehensive car warranty covers a variety of systems, including the fuel system, suspension, steering, brakes, electrical and sensors, bulbs, and batteries. It also includes other vehicular components such as the heating and air conditioning, audio and navigational devices, safety systems, and fluids.

Powertrain

Designed to last for seven years from the actual in-service date or 100,000 miles, the powertrain warranty is meant to give you the most coverage to address factory defects that may linger around on used vehicles. The powertrain limited warranty coverage focuses on the most important components of any Honda vehicle, especially the engine, transmission, and transfer case, as well as the drive system.

The replacement components for repairs are sourced from American Honda suppliers. After an examination of the car’s components, Honda will determine whether a replacement is necessary. In most cases, they’ll use remanufactured components from the factory in the basic restoration process.

Extra

In addition to the warranty coverage of specific components, the Honda CPO warranty offers additional benefits to vehicle owners. Honda provides two complimentary oil changes that are only available in the first year of vehicle ownership, a free-of-charge CARFAX vehicle history report, and a three-month subscription to Sirius XM radio.

All Honda CPO vehicles also have access to Honda’s roadside assistance and trip interruption programs, which include things like free towing, fuel delivery, jump-starts, and flat tire changes (using the spare tire).

Things Left Out of the Honda Certified Warranty

Honda tries to be transparent with what is and isn’t included, meaning there are some specific parts not included in the warranty coverage.

Wear and Tear Items

The Honda CPO warranty is limited in the coverage of items known as “wear items” since repairs or replacements are inevitable. These items, like clutches, brakes, and tires, are not included in the warranty coverage since they’re designed to wear more quickly over time than other components.

Vehicle Appearance

The Honda Pre-owned program has a 182-point inspection process where every component is scrutinized to ensure durability and reliability. This also includes an appearance inspection where both the interior and exterior features are inspected and refurbished if necessary.

What’s limited, however, is the ability to change the appearance. Changes to the color, paint finish, or accessories aren’t covered under the warranty.

The Advantages of the Honda Certified Warranty

The main benefit of the Honda CPO warranty is the value it offers for reducing the costs vehicle owners may need to pay on a typical used car. With the large coverage of powertrain and non-powertrain components, problems due to factory defect mechanical functions can be easily resolved without a high price tag.

Furthermore, the long period of coverage of the powertrain warranty offers even more protection than the factory powertrain coverage of other automakers. The extra coverage keeps the most important systems covered and offers extra peace of mind to any vehicle owner.

The Drawbacks of the Honda Certified Warranty

Honda’s factory has a long list of items and issues not covered by the warranty program. The automaker emphasizes that the proper use and maintenance of the vehicle is required. Any issues caused by incidental damage, misuse, or general wear and tear won’t be covered by Honda’s CPO warranty program.

Therefore, you may find yourself subjected to some strict rules set by Honda if you want to actually use the COP warranty to the fullest extent.

Takeaway Value

While there are a number of things that Honda doesn’t cover with its CPO warranty, the powertrain and comprehensive coverages alone offer a certain peace of mind you just can’t get when buying a used vehicle from a non-factory dealership.
