Honda Accords have a reputation as some of the most dependable cars on the market, but even the best falters now and then. If you plan to own your Accord for a long time, it’s a good idea to invest in an upgraded warranty in order to save on future repairs.

Honda’s extended vehicle service contracts are grouped under an umbrella called Honda Care, which includes new car coverage, pre-owned coverage, aa pre-owned powertrain warranty, and certified additional coverage. Today, we’re running down what each of these can do for your Honda Accord.

Coverage Basics of the Honda Accord Extended Warranty

Honda Accords are eligible for Honda Care warranties until they’re either 3 years old or have 36,000 miles on the odometer. The extended vehicle service contract lasts until the car is either 8 years old or has clocked 120,000 miles. Honda Care’s New Vehicle plan extends coverage for newly purchased Accords, while the pre-owned, pre-owned powertrain, and certified additional coverage plans cover pre-owned Accords.

Component Coverage

The core service of Honda Care is their coverage of the cost of Honda-made replacement parts. All extended warranties cover nearly every part of your Accord that might break down, excluding body parts, tires, wear and maintenance items, and some things that are only covered under Sentinel Plus (see below).

Here’s a brief rundown of what’s included: engine parts, suspension, steering and brakes, drivetrain, transmission, fuel delivery components, heating and air conditioning, and accessories. Think of it as a powertrain coverage plus plenty of extras, though it’s not quite a bumper-to-bumper warranty.

Roadside Assistance and Emergency Concierge

All Honda extended car warranties include a 24-hour roadside assistance number to help with towing, lockouts, battery jumps, tire changes, and fuel delivery. Under the New Honda and Sentinel plans, this coverage can extend to up to five Honda vehicles in the same household.

Honda Care also provides trip interruption benefits. If any covered repair requires your vehicle to stay in a garage while you need transportation, Honda will reimburse $35 a day toward a rental car for up to 6 days. If you’re more than 100 miles from home and your breakdown is mechanical, they’ll also pay you $100 a day for meals and lodging for up to 3 days.

Emergency concierge is an extra service included in the Sentinel plans, both Services and Plus. The Honda Care concierge can help you in a wide variety of emergencies with cash advances, plane ticket assistance, insurance claims, glass replacement, and personal item shipment (i.e. it’s amazing to have when your flight has been canceled).

Sentinel Services and Sentinel Plus

Honda Care extended warranties for pre-owned vehicles offer two tiers of additional coverage options: Sentinel Services and Sentinel Plus. These can be purchased concurrently with other plans.

Sentinel Services, the basic level, covers oil changes and tire hazard damage and includes emergency concierge services.

Sentinel Plus is the real draw here. On top of the Services level of coverage, it adds Honda Care’s most extensive component coverage of all. In addition to the Honda parts covered in all plans, it covers more expensive repairs to the electrical system, heating and cooling system, suspension, steering and brakes, and accessories.

Things Left Out of the Honda Accord Extended Warranty

None of the Honda Care plans, even Sentinel Plus, offer complete coverage, so read on to make sure you don’t need something Honda’s extended warranty can’t provide.

Non-Honda Parts

There’s one other thing that all Honda Care plans share: none of them cover any replacement parts that aren’t manufactured by Honda. This isn’t usually a problem, since most Accords will run best with Honda parts in them, but it does mean you can’t apply DIY maintenance or improvements with anybody else’s products.

Maintenance, Wear, and Decorative Items

Honda Care explicitly excludes the following components: body parts, tires, maintenance items, glass, upholstery, trim, carpeting, and ornamentation. According to their website, other exclusions are possible (these will almost always be parts that the vehicle owner replaced with non-Honda components).

Perks of the Honda Accord Extended Warranty

The first thing we like is that Honda Care offers a lot of options for whatever kind of Accord you’re driving—you won’t get shafted just because you have a previously owned vehicle. All Accords covered by Honda Care plans enjoy not only extensive component coverage, but other important peace-of-mind features as well—most notably 24-hour roadside assistance.

It can be hard to trust roadside assistance, but this is a plan you really can rely on, covering every eventuality from mechanical breakdowns to locking your keys in your car. Even the basic plans include money for rental cars, meals, and lodging. If you spring for a Sentinel plan, you’ll get the added knowledge that an emergency concierge is looking out for you 24/7, and it’ll be a human on the other side of the line every time.

The other benefits from the Sentinel plans are not to be discounted. Oil changes add up in the long run, so if you drive enough, getting them for free will pay for itself. And it’s awesome to not have to worry about severe tire damage.

Disadvantages of the Honda Accord Extended Warranty

While Honda Care largely succeeds in its goal of bestowing peace of mind to drivers of Accords and other models, there are a few areas in which it falls short.

The first one might have become clear in the course of reading this article: the different plans are not clearly named or differentiated. Without talking directly to your dealer, you might never be sure whether your part is covered under the new vehicle protection plan or only under Sentinel Plus.

We also wish the time limit for applying for Honda Care warranties was less stringent. Three years or 36,000 miles is not a long time, and it requires you to buy the extended warranty while you’re still covered by the factory warranty—meaning that you’re inevitably paying for some coverage you won’t get because of the double-up.

Finally, while this is a problem with all manufacturer’s warranties, we’d prefer it to not be so strict about covering only Honda parts. It adds a lot of risk for people who like to try repairing their own vehicles before taking them to the dealership.

Takeaway Value

Despite the confusing layers of coverage plans, short time limit, and restriction to Honda parts only, Honda Care’s plans can still be a good deal if you plan to put your Accord to heavier use. The more adventures you have, the more likely you’ll need roadside assistance or help from an emergency concierge.

Ultimately, the decision to get a Honda Care plan for your Accord comes down to whether you think the benefits outweigh the costs. It’s not an essential service by any means though neither is it just dealership upselling.
