Once the vehicle is sold, the company also backs it with a new limited warranty. Here are the details of the coverage that comes with any Ford Certified Pre-Owned vehicle.

What IS Covered in the Ford CPO Warranty

The Ford Certified Pre-Owned program is a combination of warranty coverage and a basic 172-point inspection program that comes with most newer Ford model year vehicles when they pass the extensive inspection checklist.

Comprehensive

The main portion of the program is the 12-month/12,000-mile limited comprehensive CPO warranty. Like a normal bumper-to-bumper warranty, this coverage applies to almost all of the parts on the vehicle from one bumper to the other. Backed by the 172-point inspection, this warranty offers some extra peace of mind in knowing that the systems and components of the new vehicle are working.

Specifically, the plan covers over 1,000 components found in the engine, transmission, front- and rear-wheel drives, steering, brakes, suspension, electrical systems, air conditioning/heating, safety, and electronic systems. This effectively extends the original bumper-to-bumper warranty for another year or 12,000 miles, which is uncommon for traditional used car sales.

Powertrain

In addition to the comprehensive limited warranty, the other half of the overall coverage comes in the form a powertrain limited warranty. Like the original coverage, this warranty focuses on the most important components found in the drivetrain, namely components that keep the vehicle going day after day.

The basic coverage includes the engine and transmission components that get inspected by the Ford Certified Pre-Owned inspection program. The total coverage period is much longer than the comprehensive warranty at seven years and 100,000 miles.

Extras

Included with the powertrain warranty is a basic 24-hour roadside assistance program. This provides emergency services for roadside breakdowns (typically when they’re caused by a factory defect) to get the vehicle running again. Such services can include rental vehicle reimbursement, travel expense reimbursement, free towing to a nearby dealership, jump starts, flat-tire changes, fuel delivery, and lockout help.

What’s NOT Covered in the Ford CPO Warranty

The CPO warranty mimics the factory coverage in many of the components and services it covers, but it also shares some of the same limitations as the original, especially with non-factory-related defects.

Maintenance Coverage

Maintaining an older vehicle can be expensive if you try to stick with the factory-recommended schedule or buy a vehicle that needs extra attention. In either case, the Ford CPO warranty doesn’t offer much to reduce costs. As a result, you should expect to pay out-of-pocket for routine services, like an oil change, or check out Ford’s Extended Service Plans for other options.

Incidental Damage

The warranty does a good job of covering repairs and parts replacements when the issue is caused by a factory defect. The same can’t be said for other issues. Damage caused by an accident, bad weather, vandalism, or general wear and tear will likely fall outside of the warranty’s coverage. Once again, this means you’ll likely need to buy an extended warranty or automotive insurance from a third party to get the right coverage.

Perks of the Ford CPO Warranty

What are the highlights of the Ford CPO comprehensive limited warranty coverage you can get from your local dealership? Namely, they come in the form of the extra peace of mind you get as the customer. Unlike typical used car dealers and companies that lack basic inspections, rental car reimbursements, and vehicle history reports, Ford does a good job of giving you more for a used vehicle.

You can see this the most with the extra perks Ford tacks onto the basic coverage. The roadside assistance and travel expense reimbursement perks, for example, offer more coverage when circumstances unexpectedly change. This is particularly good if you’re the type of driver who uses a vehicle for long road trips instead of plane travel.

Disadvantages of the Ford CPO Warranty

The main downside of the Ford CPO warranty is the short term of the limited comprehensive warranty. At one year and 12,000 miles, there isn’t much additional coverage the warranty offers. In some cases, the short period is complemented by whatever is left of the factory warranty, but this isn’t always the case for all Ford CPO vehicles. Therefore, it would be nice to see another year or two on the extension.

Takeaway Value

There’s a lot to like about the Ford CPO warranty, especially if you want to reduce the risk of buying a used vehicle. The rigorous 172-point inspection, combined with the extended warranty coverages, offers more protection than a standard used car. So, if you’re in the market for a used vehicle from the Ford Motor Company, looking at the CPO program is a good place to start.

FAQs

Q: What is a CPO program?

This is an automaker’s program to certify the used cars it resells. These programs vary from company to company, but almost all of them include a new (and shorter) warranty and some kind of inspection process.

Q: Do all used cars qualify for a CPO program?

No. Ford has specific eligibility requirements in terms of overall age and miles on the odometers. Newer vehicles tend to qualify more than older ones.
