Cadillac is a great brand with excellent performance and reliability. Nevertheless, the higher prices for new models from the Cadillac line can make it too cost-prohibitive to afford one right off the dealership lot.

The good news is that if you love Cadillac cars but cannot afford one that is brand new, you may alternatively buy a Cadillac certified pre-owned vehicle with a good amount of warranty protection straight from the manufacturer.

If you’re in the market for a slightly used Cadillac, here are the limited warranty details you should consider before making a purchase.

Cadillac CPO Warranty Basic Inclusions

The Cadillac CPO program warranty is the coverage that comes with certain used vehicles sold directly by Cadillac under certain terms and conditions. Mimicking the typical factory warranty all automakers provide, this type of warranty offers more peace of mind when buying a used Cadillac. You get the same or similar level of assistance from the automaker as you’d get with a new vehicle—a detailed vehicle inspection, a good reconditioning process (if needed), and the ability to do a road test to assess a vehicle’s mechanical condition before purchase at any Cadillac dealership.

Comprehensive Warranty

As the primary bulk of the CPO warranty, the bumper-to-bumper coverage includes the cost of nearly every factory defect repair that may be needed between your car’s front and back bumpers. Typically, this level of coverage includes almost all of the components you’ll find in a vehicle like the exterior panels and lights, interior navigation system, air conditioning, heating, digital displays, and more.

The important thing to remember with the certified pre-owned Cadillac warranty coverage, however, is that the extent of warranty repairs is limited. In other words, the included components will only be repaired or replaced when damage results from an unknown factory defect.

The Cadillac CPO warranty also covers all powertrain repairs that are (again) due to a factory defect. Powertrain components include nearly all of the most important parts and systems a vehicle needs to run. Specifically, the inclusionary list of the powertrain warranty includes engine, transmission, and drivetrain components.

While this warranty is more limited than the comprehensive coverage, it does offer a lot of value due to the greater coverage length. In general, once the comprehensive warranty has expired, the powertrain warranty continues to cover the vehicle for any lingering factory defects that may take some time to develop into a major complication.

Cadillac CPO Warranty Basic Exclusions

Since the CPO warranty is focused on factory defect issues, there are a few exclusions you need to consider before relying on the coverage to reduce or eliminate certain repair costs.

Maintenance

While the Cadillac CPO warranty covers all bumper to bumper and powertrain repairs, it does not cover certain costs that may be needed for general service repairs. These costs, coming from maintenance service and parts, fall outside of the scope of the coverage. Even parts that are covered with factory defect issues will likely not be serviced or replaced for free if you bring in the vehicle for routine maintenance

Incidental Damage

Unfortunately, the potential cost-saving value of the CPO warranty ends with other causes of vehicular damage. For example, you will likely have to pay out-of-pocket to repair damage caused by an accident, bad weather, vandalism, theft, or general wear and tear.

The reason for this exclusion comes from the nature of a factory CPO warranty itself. An automaker provides such a warranty to cover the potential costs of issues it can control. Factory defects are something automakers routinely test and address, so if one slips past its quality check, the company will take the necessary action.

For incidental damage, however, the automaker has no influence over these issues. As a result, you will likely need another form of coverage like an extended warranty or auto insurance to reduce the cost of any needed repairs resulting after an incident.

Perks of the Cadillac CPO Warranty

Despite the limitations, there are a number of benefits that come with the Cadillac CPO warranty. Some of the highlighted benefits include a $0 deductible for any qualifying repair job and 24-hour roadside assistance with courtesy transportation for the duration of the warranty.

The greatest benefit of the Cadillac CPO warranty comes from the very concept of a CPO warranty: extended protection. The Cadillac CPO warranty can be seen as an extension of the original warranty. After the initial four years or 50,000 miles of coverage from the factory (whichever comes first), the warranty generally adds an additional two years or 20,000 miles of coverage.

Disadvantages of the Cadillac CPO Warranty

While Cadillac’s certified pre-owned warranty can be considered a fair factory warranty, there are a few major drawbacks that limit the amount of money you will save from the coverage.

For example, be prepared to pay out-of-pocket for ineligible repairs. As mentioned above, labor and part costs fall outside of the scope of the warranty. Many repairs also require replacing some defective components due to incidental damage or those that have developed too much wear and tear.

You may also end up paying more for certain repairs since the warranty is less flexible on where you can get service done. Essentially, the coverage is limited to authorized dealerships and repair facilities only. Since shopping around and comparing prices can help save you money on certain types of repairs, the restrictive nature of the warranty will make it difficult to find the best deals when your options are limited.

Takeaway Value

The main appeal of a CPO warranty is the added coverage you get for buying a used car. In this regard, the Cadillac CPO warranty delivers. The basic component coverage from factory defects alone offers a good deal of peace of mind you don’t normally get buying used. If you need more protection or cost-saving value, however, an extended warranty or another form of extra coverage may be necessary instead.
