What IS Included with Acura’s CPO Warranty

Acura’s CPO program includes both a powertrain limited warranty and a non-powertrain limited warranty, which is commonly referred to a bumper-to-bumper warranty. The powertrain warranty lasts for seven years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. It’s basically an extension of the new car powertrain warranty, which is six years or 70,000 miles.

The bumper-to-bumper warranty lasts two years or 100,000 miles. It kicks in after the new vehicle limited warranty expires at four years or 50,000 miles or on the date of sale after the basic warranty comes to an end.

In order to be eligible for the Acura CPO program, vehicles must be six years old or younger with less than 80,000 miles on the odometer. Each vehicle undergoes a rigorous 182-point inspection and comes with a CARFAX vehicle history report.

The warranty is transferable to another owner, and there is no deductible.

Powertrain and Bumper-to-Bumper Coverage

The powertrain warranty covers the engine, transmission, and drivetrain. This includes the  cylinder block, timing gears, oil pan, oil pump, exhaust manifolds, seals and gaskets, torque converter, differential housing, driveshafts, and universal joints.

The bumper-to-bumper warranty covers nearly every other component on the vehicle, including the fuel system, suspension, steering, brakes, heating and cooling, electrical and sensors, and navigation. Specific items include the fuel pump, ball joints, bushings, ABS electronic control unit, disc brake calipers, radiator, heater core, alternator, and electronic control modules.

When it comes to hybrid vehicles, the warranty covers high-voltage batteries (nickel-metal hydride, lithium-ion, and polymer lithium-ion).

Additional Coverage

Acura’s CPO warranty includes 24-hour roadside assistance. If your vehicle breaks down, you can receive help with a battery jump start, flat tire replacement, emergency fuel delivery, lock-out services, and emergency towing to the nearest Acura dealership or certified repair center.

The automaker also provides Acura concierge service, trip routing and map services, and trip interruption benefits in the event that your vehicle breaks down more than 100 miles from your home. This includes reimbursement for transportation, food, and accommodations up to $300 per day and up to a maximum of $900.

The first scheduled maintenance is also covered by Acura for one year or 12,000 miles. This includes oil and oil filter changes, tire rotation, air intake filter service as well as cabin air filter, rear differential fluid, and brake fluid changes.

Acura also provides certified car owners with three months of free XM Satellite Radio.

What’s NOT Included with Acura’s CPO Warranty

Acura’s CPO program is quite comprehensive, but it doesn’t cover everything. Normal maintenance and wear and tear (i.e. spark plugs, wiper blades, bulbs, and brake pads) are excluded.

The warranty also doesn’t cover vehicle misuse/abuse, improper maintenance, emission-related repairs, or damage related to environmental conditions (i.e. flooding, fire, rust, and corrosion).

The warranty does not cover repairs on non-approved Acura genuine parts or accessories, nor does it cover body parts, interior, trim, and glass.

The Good Things about the Acura CPO Warranty

The best part about Acura’s CPO warranty is the length of the powertrain coverage. At seven years or 100,000 miles, it’s one year longer than what many of its competitors offer. This provides Acura owners with some peace of mind when buying a used vehicle.

The warranty also includes an extra two years or 100,000 miles of bumper-to-bumper protection, which will cover nearly any type of factory defect should it manifest within the warranty period.

We also like the inclusion of one complimentary scheduled maintenance visit, roadside assistance, rental car reimbursement, trip interruption benefits, concierge services, and three free months of satellite radio.

Finally, there is no deductible for repairs, and the warranty is transferable to a subsequent owner. This can boost the value of your certified Acura should you decide to sell it before the warranty expires.

The Bad Things about the Acura CPO Warranty

Even though Acura’s CPO warranty is nearly comprehensive in what it covers, there are some limitations. For example, it does not cover normal maintenance, wear and tear, or damage caused by vehicle misuse, improper maintenance, or environmental factors. But it’s worth noting that most automakers put the same conditions in their warranties.

Another drawback is the powertrain warranty starts at the vehicle’s original purchase date and is only an extension of the original factory warranty of six years or 70,000 miles. Therefore, if you buy a car that’s six years old, you only get one additional year of powertrain coverage, unless you hit 100,000 miles first.

Takeaway Value

It can be a hassle to purchase a used car because you don’t always know what you’re getting. That’s why a CPO warranty can be useful. Each certified Acura undergoes a tough inspection process before it’s approved for sale, which guarantees its roadworthiness. You know a used Acura is in good operating condition when you drive it off the dealership lot.

A CPO warranty can protect you against potentially expensive and unexpected repairs when it comes to factory-related defects. You don’t get the same assurance if you opt to buy a non-certified Acura.
